have you tried to use that trap+camera combination in case of other aquatic species?

(because that device seems to be of use in studies on freshwaters crayfish)

Hi Zsolt....The only other aquatic species we are looking at now are other reef fish species that we also detected during this study.  I think the gear combination has tremendous potential for a lot of aquatic species and it would be worth while testing.  I see no reason why this style of sampling would not be useful for freshwater crayfish.  Are you involved with crayfish monitoring?

Actually there are frequent requests (of various private companies/developers) to assess the stocks of aquatic species of potential economic interest (in most of the casese, other than fish). Usually, the target groups are leeches, frogs and crayfish. Rarely other groups (as shellfish, snails etc.). In case of crayfish I published only an example related to the fact that in some areas are not reasonable (meaning: economically profitable) to exploit the stocks (see below the link to  the article).

Anyway, in some areas of the Danube Delta there are bigger cray-fish populations and, consequently, it is worthwhile to use other than classic methods to carry out studies related to the biology of the respective species (as is the method You used in case of fish).

P.S. I will have to read a little bit more carefully the article You indicated in order to see if / how can that method be used in case of tadpoles...

 I remember reading an OM paper which included two examples, one of which was I think darter fish.  If I find it again I'll link it - found this link looking for it though.

I've also attached a thesis I found on another fish species, hope these help.

'Thank Paul....The thesis is interesting. Its good work.  And so is the paper. In the paper, they use spatial replicates to create the data structure necessary for the occupancy model. This is common for fish sampling because most fish sampling is invasive in some way....so you just can't replicate sampling in the exact same spot without invoking some sort of dependence. Currently I'm working on methods that overcome this issue when using N-mixture and occupancy models. Finding these examples is a great help...Thanks!

Alternatively, there are some papers using the Royle-Nichols (2003) model to estimate fish abundance, which has a similar abundance model structure, but different observation model structure.
