I am on the look out for a good and easy software to open my nanoscope files on my Mac OS X system. I am already aware that ImageJ has a plugin for the same. I am also aware of the Image SXM software that runs natively on Mac. But, I am looking out for alternatives that I could try to get the best output results. Something on the lines of the Nanoscope software available from Veeco for the Windows platform.

You could try Gwyddion (http://gwyddion.net) or AtomicJ (http://scitation.aip.org/content/aip/journal/rsi/85/6/10.1063/1.4881683).
@Sabino Maggi, Thank you for your reply. However, i find Gwyddion very cumbersome to start using in the first place. Especially since am no advanced computer user. I tried AtomicJ, but I cannot find the options to flatten or equalize the images which is very basic image processing options needed for analyzing AFM images. Do you have any idea on the same?

I tried to run Nanoscope in a similar way but that software refuses to Install/Run in the wine environment.
Unfortunately I cannot help you. I agree with you, Gwyddion is interesting but too cumbersome to use. In my work I have always used SPIP, but it runs only on Windows. However nothing prevents you to use a Windows Virtual Machine under OS X.
If you want to stick to OS X, I fear you are limited to Gwyddion and AtomicJ, as well as the packages that you mention, ImageJ and Image SXM.
Maybe you could find useful Fiji (http://fiji.sc/Fiji), which is ImageJ with a lot of well chosen and organized plugins.
Shauna: I got WSxM running on Mac using WineBottler quite easily. The 3D doesn't work, but otherwise ok.
The best so far is try to use Gwyddion, this is your best bet. It uses less system resources and once you get the flow it gets real easy. Its worth the effort and time spent on gwyddion, plus, it also has exhaustive set of features.

I'm not an expert on Mac OS but I managed to get Gwyddion installed and running on High Sierra. I write here what instructions I followed exactly:
1. From App Store install Xcode (essentials)
2. From App Store install Go2Shell
2.1 open Go2Shell and type (ignore what is in parentheses when typing):
xcode-select --install (note the double hyphen preceding 'install')
hit 'enter' and a windows will be opened, click 'install' and then 'agree'.
2.2 In Go2Shell window type and enter:
sudo xcodebuild -license (your admin password will be required, just type it and hit enter. You won't see your password on the screen)
the license file will be shown on the window. Hit 'space' several times until you reach the end of the file. Type:
agree
and hit enter.
3. Install XQuartz from xquartz.org
download the installer and open it, then follow installer instructions.
4. Install MacPorts for your OS version (mine is High Sierra). https://www.macports.org/install.php

4.1 open new Go2Shell window (this is important). Type and enter:
sudo port -v selfupdate (again your password will be required)
5. Install Gwyddion. In the new Go2Shell window type and enter:
sudo port install gwyddion
when you see the message 'Continue?: y/n' just type and enter:
y
6. Wait for Gwyddion to be installed. To open it go to Finder->MacPorts and double click on the Gwyddion icon.

most easiest solution to this problem is to use virtual box. There u can use windows operating system as a virtual platform and you will be able to run Origin, WSXM these.
