Generally, all the membrane proteins localized specific destination inside the cell by different mechanism, like organelle specific protein destined by its signal sequence, it is true for membrane localized proteins also? Aniruddha: 'Cytosolic' proteins can have tags within their peptide sequence that target them to distinct cellular organelles and protein or lipid domains. For example, nuclear localization sequence, pleckstrin homology (PH) 2 and 3 domains, PDZ binding domains, etc. They also can be postranslationally and reversibly modified with tags like myristoylation, palmitylation, ubiquitylation, etc. that direct them to a pathway or subcellular location. "Molecular Biology of the Cell" by Alberts and colleagues is a good basic cell biology text that will provide invaluable reading for you.
