Safaa K. Kadhem : The first participation was in 2009 where I have the following paper:
Nidhal El-Omari and Arafat Awajan, “Document Image Segmentation and Compression Using Artificial Neural Network Based Technique”, The Proc. of the International Conference on Information and Communication Systems (ICICS09), Amman-Jordan, Paper ID 516, Pages:320-324, December 20-22, 2009.
It was a valuable opportunity. I was very critical before. But the task goes very easily.
The most meaning full conference was at Penn State re: medical/clinical ethics. It reaffirms the Hippocratic Oath and that we are likely to be sued for bad attitude than bad technique.
My first oral comunication was in a health science pregraduated congress in my university (Complutense University of Madrid). I remember that I was very nervous but after the presentation I felt very proud of myself. Furthermore I won a award for the best paper. This was my first science article:Article ¿Existe Relación entre el Motivo de Consulta que aportan los...
Even now I find conferences a source of anxiety. It is often good to catch-up with people and meet new researchers. but lying in wait there is always the 'tricky challenging customer' - hahah.
For me, it was presenting at the prestigious BIAL Foundation, in Porto about 10 years ago. Translators, and television cameras were there, which added to my sense of excitement and the level of importance. It was my first real taste in an environment where scientists and members of the public could ask you open questions about your research. It was quite terrifying to be honest and yet at the same time, exciting to be a part of.
I suppose, It is having something that you think is actually important enough to say about a research area/topic where others appear to know much more than you. It is the perception that this will foster discussion, and is something that you actually think may add to the wealth of research.
I think we all have relevant things to say, and these occasions are extremely important for researchers to not only support each other but to attend events and continually disseminate recent research.
My first participation in a conference was in 1989 in Reims in France; I was still preparing my doctoral thesis, my feeling is that I was very proud and very happy with this participation.

Dear Safaa K. Kadhem back in 1983 I was working as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. At that year the Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC) held their Annual Conference in Montreal. My supervisor just registered me for an oral lecture without asking me. Thus I was pretty excited when I gave my first lecture in English (I'm originally from Germany) but everything went well. Due to the corona pandemic this year's CIC meeting is held online:
Your question took me back to when I was disseminating our research 'Living with Faecal Incontinence' that was what my PhD was on. I did teach as part of my role when doing clinical work and had sometimes spoken to a larger group; so when I spoke at a conference, I was not too overwhelmed. And I was very familiar with my research!
I spoke at the Royal College of Nursing Continence Care Forum annual conference and spoke to the all those attending (not just a smaller group). I was very conscious that I had very bright lights on me, and apart from the first few rows, I was just aware of the hall being full, but that was about all.
The audience seemed to be listening, but I can't remember about the questions at the end. But my memory is of feeling positive and of people then talking to me at other times during the conference; during meal breaks or while viewing the exhibition. The reps on the stands were normally very keen to talk about the latest products that the companies they worked for had been keeping to launch for the first time at the conference, but they were mentioning my research!
Thank you for this question, which is a good one, and it opens a nice discussion!
My first participation in a conference was in Dec 1988 through my research presentation at the Geology of Desert Environment International Conference (Conference Paper The Effect of Soil Conditioners on Sand Dunes Fixation in Ba...
Which has been held in Baghdad, Iraq. The paper was retrieved from my M.Sc thesis. I still remember that unforgettable day until now.
So what are the main reasons people attend conferences? A big reason for going to conferences is to meet with likeminded people and industry peers. ... As you build your professional network, conferences can become a good place for meeting with people in your field that you haven't connected in a while.
He was in Turkey, and it was a unique experience with very distinguished colleagues, and I benefited a lot from acquaintances as well as a number of friends
In 2001, I had a mixed feeling between pride and confusion for being among professors and scholars, and this is my first experience and it was wonderful.
Thank you for the interesting topic of discussion.
The first time I attended a conference was in 2015. It was an international conference in Salt Lake City, Kolkata, India.
I enjoyed the conference very much and made some great friends there. At that time I was in a corporate job. The desire to be a researcher and an academician generated from there.
Since I am a very old professor and researcher, my first participation in a conference was in the Summer of 1982. It was a mix of pride and intimidation due to the presence of well-known top scholars. Nowadays, I don't attend conferences anymore since I am still meeting year after year the same academics repeating the same research topics and arguments. I prefer to attend my students' events that are innovative and fresh.
