I'm writing a book chapter on early scientific studies of dreams. I'm fascinated by how difficult it was to record dreams prior to the mid-twentieth century. One had to have a candle, matches, pencil, and paper at the bed-site. No tape recorders until the late 1940s. One wonders about the "paper" format. Does anyone know when index cards (3x5, 4x6, 5x8) were first manufactured and sold by stationers for researchers to use? I'm not interested in the index card systems for card catalogs and medical records, but when researchers might buy index cards for data collection. I know there was a Boston Index Card Company, but am not finding much information.
