I want to know if a pile cap of a bridge having a depth of 2.5 meters and a span to depth ratio of 2.4:1, will it be modeled as a thick plate element or thick shell element.
According to my understanding 2.5 m deep pile cap will be a rigid body and will not bend, theirfore be modeled as a thick plate.

yes your understanding is right. However, using thick shell or plate is not going to affect much as plates are specialized shells.
Thankyou @Abhimanyu Kumar, However, when i analyze bridge using thick shell element for pile cap, piles fail in bending as they become over stressed. where as when i analyze using thick plate, piles pass. So there is a difference. thats why i want to know a correct approach here.
This is strange!! As you know, plates can deform only in bending whereas shells can deform in bending, shear and tension/compression (membrane and bending coupling). Therefore, plate is always a specialization of shells. If with plates pile passes, and with shell it doesn't then definitely something is wrong
