In light of current US political events, I am highly tempted to enter into a Facebook debate with persons who have dissented to what I have written. Is this ever productive?
As far as entering a debate in the virtual world is concerned, it is a tricky one. As far as you know the person it is still okay but chances are that there are many pseudo personalities which dominate the web. Entering into a debate online could quickly escalate into a nasty one if the other person doesn't like to be corrected or is not open-minded. The debate with regard to political events in the context of any nation is a contentious issue and is bound to attract much attention much to your joy or dismay. The productivity of such a debate would entirely depend upon the intellectuality, intellectuality, expertise and open-mindedness of the other person.
My personal experience is that hotly debated topics are better let alone, for usually nothing will come out of the debate and a lot of times debate will turn into sheer name calling. Just for you to consider.

if you have commanding on topics, the you will debate in FB. The FB Political debates were most active during elections, but if you are interested in following the posts of congressmen their sites still discus politics today.

I do not think it is productive to enter into a debate that arises within this social network
In this social network that is very useful to have a false sense of security, beliefs, solid formation and culture is varied and very heterogeneous.
I am not part of this network because I do not believe in it, even though I know it exists, it is not my trust
it is not wise to enter into a debate in Facebook....if you really know a person, talk to him and have a debate in person that will yield a better results....
Thanks for your advice, Selvam! In the vast majority of cases, I agree. I think the only advantage of having a debate on Facebook is that other people can see the strength of your position in contrast to the weakness of the opposing position. Even if you think you have no realistic chance of convincing your opponent of your view, you might still persuade followers of the conversation by showing the intellectual superiority of your view over that of your opponent.
When you debate someone point-by-point in social media, you legitimize their dissent, and in social media, the dissenter is often not open-minded or willing to seek compromise.
As you say, it may be an educational undertaking for third parties, but such interaction is often filled with logical falacies that can muddy the water. These ligical falacies often sound good, so can make it HARD for you to show intellectual superiority.
