I've seen in a number of publications involving the growth of biofilms in microtitre plates, that the media is changed following an initial attachment phase (which can range from 2 - 8 hours depending on the surface and bacteria).
What is the purpose of allowing the bacteria to initially attach? Is it to simulate how a biofilm forms naturally? Is it possible to just leave the initial inoculum and media for the normal 18 - 24 hour incubation before changing media?

It is common practice that media need to be changed after initial attachment. The fresh medium will provide sufficient nutrient for the development of biofilm and may reduce the chances of interruption from metabolites, if any. That is little i know from my few biofilm assays during my PhD.
Under prolonged incubations, the nutrients in the initial media will be used up and therefore fresh media is added. Based on the papers I used as referrences, 24 hrs of incubation doesnt require the media to be changed. Only when the incubation period is prolonged beyond 24 hrs (48,72 hrs etc). But again, its possible that different protocols might be used for different organisms.
