I am doing an electrophoresis using a Tris-Acetate gel and the vendor offers a 1.0 mm and 1.5 mm thick gels. I just want some insight on the advantages. Thank you
You can run thinner gels at higher voltages so they run faster and the heat dissipation is better so you do not cook the gel and samples spread less for thinner gels so for fragments that are very close in size a thinner gel is better. All old slab sequencing gels which separated 1base fragments were made very thin. Thicker gels will allow larger sample sizes so will be better for low concentration samples differing greatly in size and for re purification of larger amounts of dna
