I want to extract a plant materials through maceration using methanol, Thus I grind to finely powdered using electric grinder...So is there any problem if I am using just this finely powdered plant material... since one of my colleagues said to me, it is better if used coarsely powdered rather than finely powdered one.
for extraction, be it by water or organic solvent, the test plant material have to be dried, using various means (room temp. ambient temp, heat evaporators) and the dried material should be grounded to powder before extraction. a powdered material provide a large surface area and allow maximum extraction of active principles from aplant material.and a better way to determine yield by weighing the residues. Ebrahim, you are on course carry on with your research.
Thanks all, I already finely powdered the plant material for maceration but as I have said someone says coarse powder is better than fine powder, as fine powder makes agglutination so that difficult to filter! any how I want thanks all for your comment so I am proceeding with finely powdered material if there is no scientific evidence which preclude from using it for maceration technique!!
The centrifuge of the extract will help you to remove fine particles from it.
if u fell the fineness of the powder is problem, pack the powder in whatmann or ordinary filter paper and keep for maceration,. this pack is called as thimble and it will not allow any fine powder in to the solvent. u can just decant the menstum direcly from the container. all the best

You may face problem during filtration of extract. It may take longer time to filter it. So I too would recommend not to use very fine grinding of plant material to be extracted.
