Smectic-A has a very peculiar feature in x-ray diffraction. The higher-order x-ray diffraction is either absent or very weak.

This might be easy for people who have followed the progress on this. And please forgive me for my ignorance if this is the case.

The only thing I was aware of is that people used to assume that the density profile along the layer normal is a sinusoidal function. For me this is hard to believe.  What is the chance of a periodic function being sinusoidal?
