Assuming the reactor is of pilot-scale or bigger, feeding feedstocks only when the reactor has reached steady state temperature distribution is rather time consuming and inefficient not to mention it is less economically viable.
Is it only for experiments and research purposes?
Hi Tea, one of the most difficult tasks in the plant is to achieve the reactor steady state. It is a slow process. However, if the reaction is exothermic or endothermic, or simply the reactor has multiple steady states, the only way to achieve the wanted steady state is controlling the initial condition in the reactor and control the feeding feedstocks.
If there are continuous input & continuous output at proper rates of flow for both and with no accumulation inside the reactor, there will be an overall state of equilibrium. I understand the steady state as having the same conditions of e.g. P, T, and amount at any given point within the reactor at any time. So, feeding feed stocks has to be done together with the removal of products through the effluent(s) and not necessarily for experimentation or research purposes.

it is elementary for homogenous distribution of progress of the selected group of reactions. Just imagine that the rate of reaction can easily double by a raise of 10 C.
