If so, then it seems that trials subsequent to the 1st trial in regular extinction paradigms should work in the exact same way as all trials in a “post-retrieval” extinction paradigm.
But there are so many papers showing differences in return of fear after regular and “post-retrieval” extinction. So I guess I must be missing something. Does it perhaps take quite a while for the reconsolidation phase to begin?
I've always had that question too, actually. I believe that the difference, like you mentioned, is the time interval used between
1. The initial encoding period and re-activatation, and
2. The re-activation and eventual manipulation of the labile memory
