Shouldn't the 1st exposure to a CS+ during regular extinction training cause retrieval of the related memory? And if so, shouldn't this cause the reconsolidation phase/labile period for this to begin?

If so, then it seems that trials subsequent to the 1st trial in regular extinction paradigms should work in the exact same way as all trials in a “post-retrieval” extinction paradigm.

But there are so many papers showing differences in return of fear after regular and “post-retrieval” extinction. So I guess I must be missing something. Does it perhaps take quite a while for the reconsolidation phase to begin?
