Hello, I need a model to simulate the formation of traffic jams, to estimate waiting times at crossings, information in this regard. I need to work with a road network on the scale of a medium-sized city (200-500 thousand inhabitants). I have traffic flow data on major roads to feed the system.
Hope someone can help me choose a software.

Try VISSIM from PTV AG. I used VISSIM for my PhD to simulate an intersection traffic congestion.

I guess it can be a macro/mesoscopic model to model a city with 200-500k people. But depending on your simulation modeling levels, it could be a macro/mesoscopic model or a microscopic model. In addition, are you looking for a commercial model version or open source model? As per commercial versions, NYCDOT has modeled for city using AIMSUN which can provide micro/meso/macro level simulation features while VISSIM/VISUM package also can be a good candidate for both macro and microscopic modeling. As per a open source model, MATSIM (http://www.matsim.org/content/quickstart) and SUMO are recommended. Thank you.

As per my opinion " VISSIM " is the best software for traffic flow simulation.
You might also consider TRANSIMS that is open source and includes mighty activity based macroscopic and microscopic modeling functionalities: https://sourceforge.net/projects/transims/.
Its learning curve is flat in the beginning but gets steeper after some reading and trials.
Do you think SUMO can be used by secondary school students to learn about modelling?
No one is adding an answer ;) my point here is use virtual tools to secondary school students to develop their own mathematical models. This virtual tools must represent reality in a rich way, but also must be easy to use. Is it posssible with SUMO? Do you know any other tools for that?
