I was going through the website of an open access SCI indexed journal paper and their publication charge is 1700 dollars. I feel this is quite expensive considering researchers from humble backgrounds and developing countries. some researchers salary for 3 months is the same amount this journal is charging for publication of a paper.
There are two famous open access publishers. One is MDPI and other one is Hindawi. For all the SCI journals with Impact Factor, publication charges are very high. You may use money from the funding source. I agree, it is difficult to pay such high APC.
If your research grant covers publication fees then you can spend such a large amount of money. Otherwise it is not recommended.
I think the cost of publication is too high by the proclaimed reputable journals.
The charges is what they use to cover hosting for their website and other expenses, that's why it is high.
The solution is focus on quality researches and publish free in subscription journals. There are also some good journals (e.g ranked in Thompson Reuters) that are free open access. These journals usually have sponsors. I have published in one.
Extra charges especially for researchers who have no sources of funding.
@Joshua Ighalo......I don't understand your stand. The costs of publication is on the high side and its unacceptable. Even if one is been funded, what is the contribution of the self-acclaimed reputable journal in the research process to demand for such amount?
The charge for the open access is fixed without consideration for which part of the world that paper is coming from whether developing, transition or advanced countries. However, with collaborations and possibly availability of research grants, you may be able to pay.

it's better to do quality research and compete to publish in free journals!
Open access for a research is good for some young researcher but motivation for authors for further research or to improve their knowledge if possible should be considered.
