Soils of the world are exhaustively characterized for their physical and chemical properties, but their biological properties are neglected if not ignored. It becomes imperative to review the soil science research the world over to find out why soils are least considered for their biological status.

There are projects to use next-generation sequencing to sequence the DNA or RNA from soils, and use these data to begin to describe the biological composition of soils. Check out 'metagenomics' for more details.
