It will help reducing pollution due to reduction of using chemicals and producing healthier food and safer environment. BUT can we do it??? I doubt it.
There are a lot of constrains first of which is economic returns for the growers and manufacturers of agro-chemicals.
There is a need to convince growers to shift to conservation agriculture. It helps to safe the environment. I consider it the midway between conventional agriculture and organic agriculture.
You will reduce the pollution caused by agricultural activities. But the main problem is how to convince the farmers to do so if not compensated them for any reduction in yield
Actually, if we only consider conservation agriculture for wheat crop world wide, there will be 10% increase in yield so wheat production is 584 million tonnes, its 10% counts 58.4 million tonnes extra. which is a huge amount. Indeed, 9 million people dies due to hunger (lack of food) each year world wide (borgenproject.org).
By 10% increase we can save 871 million lives which is 96.7 times more than our need.
It is just an instance same crucial for other resource too.
It's hypothetical. The policies and infrastructures need to be in hand for conservation agriculture to implement. Even around 6-8 million tonnes of wheat can be produced in the eastern part of the country, couldn't happen due to lack of production technologies used compared to NW India.
Literature speaks advantages of CA. It's fact. But, to have conservation agriculture in practice, the basic fundamentals of adopting it needs huge activities. Farm scale efforts are the need of the hour .
Well, despite been very difficult to apply it and convince the current farmers, simply, it will insure stable and sustainable ecosystems and thereby a better world.
Conservation Agriculture (CA) has long term gain in terms of soil health, natural resources and ecosystem. Off course, difficulty at farm level implementation particularly small and medium farmers unless we make it economically viable. Hence, implementation in selected crops, selected agro ecological zones dully supported by proven technology and in phase manner may shift the paradigm
Either it's Conservation Agriculture & Sustainable Agriculture, challenges in front of human beings is what are going to transfer to our next generations? Mammoths like use of agrichemicals, deforestation, industrialization etc have created extreme imbalance. We are numerous deaths due to pollutions, cancers etc. It's obvious that we need to decide what are we planning for our children, grand children & their children
I Googled the definitions of conventional vs conservation agriculture.
According to the definitions I read, conservation farming involves crop rotation, runoff management and conservative tillage management.
I have worked with farmers for 25 years, from emerging farmers to giant corporates with 1000s' of hectare under cultivation. I have never seen anything other than conservation farming. Everyone that calls themselves a farmer knows that If you do not look after your natural resources you will be bankrupt in 4 years.
obviously, it is a common truth now a days for farmers but the thing is to study scientifically every and each aspect beyound onservation agriculture is important.
Though It's a very nice idea but i think It's not possible too. Really, it will be more beneficial for the whole world and especially for the human being and soil as well.
The assumption is that all the benefits associated with conservation agriculture will be transferred to the environment and human beings like Bir Jahanir Shirazy has put it.
This a very interesting post. I don't think this will solve all problems associated with conventional agriculture. Because conservation agriculture also has some drawbacks which hinder the overall sustainability. We should think about balancing these methods for the benefit of the future generation.
When we talk about conventional or conservational agriculture we need to stick with some key feactures of both ; like if we talk about CA it is good and more ebnironmental friendly but at the same time it demand higher ratural resources like for irrigation we need water for flood or surface irrigation but in CA we will mainly focus on efficient irrigation methods to conserve maximum water Ristina Siti Sundari
