I would like to now instead of from those who ave used NVIVO, or those who have sometimes chosen to use it and other times not, why did you use it in some instances? What was the plus that it would provide compared to other methods?
NVivo is pretty the same as other qualitative data analysis programs, such as ATLAS.ti, Dedoose, and MAXQDA. A major strength of these programs is maintaining consistency for complex coding systems with large data sets. Consequently, I personally would not go to the trouble of using software if I had a very simple coding system or a rather small number of interviews.
Another advantage of these programs is that they make your data easy to search, because the coding essentially "indexes" the data. Again, searching for codes and comparing them can be done with manual coding if your system is simple enough and your dataset is small enough. But if your data set is more complex and larger, then the searching capacities of software can be quite useful.
I used NVivo for coding data from almost 30 interviews, it helped with organizing and sorting information and generating themes for analysis. It also allowed me to identify and visually organize connections among the themes I detected. I agree with the comment above, for smaller samples and more simple coding, such a software use can be time- and effort-intensive.
There are many advantages of Nvivo.Dor example we can do coding in nvivo and identify the major themes on Nvivo. We can also do a sentiment analysis of some Thousands of posts from social media sites,we can do word count text search comparison between gender wise groups .So it is excellent to organise and see the qualitative data you collected like interview secondary data video audio etc
I’m currently using it for reviewing literature. I have got to the point where I only read articles after they’ve been uploaded to EndNote then exported to NVivo. In addition to reading and creating nodes, I’ve been using NVivo explore functions by combining text search and code search to crawl through hundreds of articles and to triangulate paragraphs that address research questions. Let me know if you’re interested to know more.
I think NVIVO is a great tool for both managing and analysing data. Dependent on the task at hand it gives a lot of flexibility. When analysing transcripts you can use basic key word searches to more complex network linking. The ability to create/combine nodes and copy frameworks from other projects is also useful. I have also used it for literature reviews, and analysing visual and video content. Wouldnt be able to work without it really
