First, you need to frame your content analysis before you know what kinds of issues you want to code from the news content....so, why are you undertaking the analysis? Is there some theory behind your analysis? What variables does the theory identify as potentially important? In addition, you would need to, in a strongly designed study, identify variables that could be used to disconfirm the theory.
Knowing only a little about studies of news reports of suicides, the primary form such research takes is typically assessing whether, controlling for other factors affecting suicide, news reporting may or may not contribute to suicides. Here, an interesting question is whether it is the number of reported suicides or the content of the reports that may generate an effect. There are numerous studies that address this issue, and you can use those as guides for the kinds of variables you need to collect.
Another approach that can be taken is to assess whether the content of suicide news reports reflect any rules the media creates for reporting suicides. You don not indicate the country (countries) from which these news reports are collected. But several countries have such guidelines (for an example of such a study see: Pirkis, Jane, R. Warwick Blood, Annette Beautrais, Philip Burgess, and Jaelea Skehan. (2006). Media guidelines on the reporting of suicide. Crisis 27, 2: 82-87.). You can use those guidelines to identify variables you would code from the media content. You can assess whether the media material actually follows the guidelines.
