Applications in microbial, plant, animal, or material synbio included; are there specific benefits the synbio community could gain from more directly interacting with the systems biology/omics community?
To me, I think there are lots of ethical concerns that needs to be attended. The inherent purpose would however be to re-engineer biological systems to bring or counter novel (or beneficial) tasks.
In bringing or coalescing omics data, I fee Biosecurity/Biosafety measures needs to be implemented. The EU synbio consortia or synbiobeta are working on these avenues to meet the requirements of grants/funding.
Theintroduction of synthetic gene modules will likely also perturb the global regulatoryt network and metabolism of the engineered cells. Integrated systems level omics tools will provide insight on these perturbation, and allow better and more effective designs. Concerns on synbio applications often depends how the risk perceived by the public. Honesty, education and public trust need to be gained, with a good regulatory and a risk assessent system in place. Thew involvement of omics will deepen our understanding and should pose no additional ethics hurdles.
