It does not seem that the definition of dissertation to thesis change from across the atlantic as suggested in

but it also changes from a university to another in Canada without a full agreement between universities

while not even a mention of dissertation
https://www.ualberta.ca/graduate-studies/current-students/academic-requirements/thesis-requirement-and-preparation
I believe it is due to the mixed background!
