Are you asking, how does one rank cases if the cases are measured on a set of variables (and you want the ranking to use information from all of the variables in the set)?
If so, the problem simplifies to how to create a composite score for cases. The answer depends on what the intended use of the score (or resultant ranking) is, and what the intended meaning of the score would be--what attribute is the score meant to represent?
If, for example, you have some external or criterion variable that you believe captures the attribute of interest, then ordinary multiple regression may be satisfactory to identify a viable linear combination of your variable set that maximally correlates with this external variable.
If you have something else in mind, perhaps you could elaborate your query a bit, being sure to indicate the variables and intended use/meaning of the scores/rankings. Your chances of getting a more focused recommendation would be much better.
