The financial and economic crisis of today will possibly lead to a conflict between the advocates of classical models of economic development and the proponents of sustainable development models. The formers, argue with the need for faster growth as a way of responding to unemployment and economic stagnation albeit sometimes at the expense of the environment and biological diversity; the latter, argue that sustainable development is the only way to reconcile human welfare with life support systems of the planet.
In this context, a reduction in funding for research and practice in conservation biology is probably expected in the following years.
