We use ePortfolios throughout our 3 year doctor of physical therapy curriculum. Students are required to provide evidence of and reflect on a variety of elements of our mission including reflective practice, evidence based practice, core values, etc. We gather some rich data from each student. Was wondering if anyone else is using ePortfolios and if so, what types of assessments are you using?
Evaluation of e-Portfolio is certainly not easy to do. This should be, by the way, the same situation as with a regular portfolio. What we did successfully to identify individual differences in learning is the SOLO taxonomy proposed by Biggs (Structure of Learning Outcome). The idea is to categorize entries according to the complexity of thought and ideas. I you are interested, I can provide references, but a search on SOLO and Biggs & Collis should navigate you, also.
Thanks Margarete! You are right, analyzing portfolios is a complex process. I am not familiar with SOLO. However, I have been thinking of using Bloom's Taxonomy as a way of assessing whether students are just reporting experiences and facts, analyzing and synthesizing what they learned from those experiences, or whether they have taken it to the level of synthesizing their thoughts and making decisions based on what they learned. I am also interested in the work of Mezirow: to what degree do students analyze the content, process, and premise of their experiences. I have used these in the past to analyze reflective journals with some success. However, I will certainly look at SOLO a bit more.
Solo is similar to Blooms but to my mind is better structured for analysis. It provides a good source of criteria for assessment of any extended writing.
