HI there,
I am measuring total organic carbon and invert abundance along a transect that is moving away from an ancient woodland. I am unsure what statistical analysis to use. As our n=30 but we are using a line transect so the data is not random. A non parametric test is the direction I am headed but not sure which way.

You can use a nonparametric test (Wilcoxon and Kruskal–Wallis) for few data.
Also use principal component analysis.

If you have 30 samples along a transect and you've identified and counted the invertebrates and taken some environmental measurements, then a non-parametric multivariate approach is probably the way to go. The underlying idea is to compare patterns along the transect, rather than to compare samples.
Jay Holmes when it comes to statistical package I personally love the SPSS software which has the reputation of being the easiest statistics software and most widely used u can say. This SPSS software is favorite among the students in universities which are mostly related to social science and pyshology. So SPSS is my personal favourite.
