For SEM observation we often need to plate a thin layer of gold on the sample to enhance electrical conductivity. However how to remove the gold confused me for a long time since Au has a large absorption of light which is a disaster for optical devices. I have tried supersonic cleaning in acetone, aqua regia(bad for the sample). Neither worked well.
Do optical microscopy first. It's the only advice you can get. There are essecially two ways to get rid of gold coating: 1) aqua regia; 2) repolishing or a cross section. Unfortunately, only a few types of specimens are suited for such treatments.

Thank you for the advice! I searched the Internet and found some paper says that Iodine solution of potassium iodide can help remove the gold on the sample. Have you ever tried this?
I never did it, but you can try to dissolve thin gold film by amalgamation (immersing in the mercury), it's safe for non-metallic samples surface.

... but what if you use some other coating, like C?
I mean, amorphous carbon for incresing conductivity can work well, depending on what do you use SEM for...
