If POD or DMD is applied to flows which are not turbulent in a broad sense, which means that there is not much chaotic mixing, will they carry any significance? Because there will be not many spatial and temporal scales like in a turbulent flow.
In principle less turbulent flows in the sense that the associate dynamical system posses a small number of Lyapunov exponents, would lead to a lower dimensional dynamics. As a consequence one would expect techniques such as POD to need less components do describe the behavior of the system.
I think that a similar question could be posed for the evaluation of the spectral density of energy. Mathematically you can do an avaluation of the spectra but if the flow is just unsteady laminar you will get just the distribution of energy at one or few wavenumbers. You have very few components.
