I coded the scale variable as better= 1, about the same=2, worse=3, declined to answer=555.00, not applicable=777.00 in the values section of SPSS. But the output shows only the better, about the same and worse as "string" while declined to answer and not applicable show as numeric 4.00 and 12.00 respectively. What should I do to change the numeric to string (decline to answer and not applicable)?

Why string? Just change the variable type to ordinal or nominal. Also, you designate spwcific values as indicative of 'missingness' types.

Thanks Mathew. I did change the variable to ordinal and nominal but the issues remain the same. Do you think designating values for not applicable and decline to answer have resulted to that issue? And if they were responsible, how do I address people who decline to answer and not applicable? Your response is greatly appreciated.
