Depth of Penetration test can determine ceramic performance but what should be the minimum allowable ceramic size and backing size to perform the test and also how can we measure the depth (techniques for measuring tail weight of bullet) ??
I do not recommend to use DoP test for ceramic tiles, due to the large amount of variation in DoP. Also the semi-infinite backing results in an unrealistic high ballistic efficiency (not representative for any real armour system).
Tile size should be at least 10 times the diameter of the projectile. Ceramic tiles can be ballistically tested without a backing layer or with some thin backing (Aluminum, Polymer, etc). By measuring the velocity (and preferably also the mass) of the residual projectile some well measurable parameter is obtained to rank different ceramic materials. Try to keep the areal density (thickness * density) of the targets constant.
