why do you want slots? If for multi-band performance or to make them broadband then yes, there are formulae for the dimensions and also the position is to be decided for the same.
For example to make a MPA dual band just etch a slot with length equal to quarter of guided wavelength. Position is determined according to impedance of slot.
for making it wide band you may etch slot along the length of MPA.
For MPA's I personally find the book by Ramesh Garg et.al., you will find these concepts in there.
Depending on what you want to achive you have to make different slots in size and position. In my opinion the best way to do that is find the characteristic modes of the antenna and observe the current :
Then you can decide which mode you are exciting on the antenna and based on it's current disctribution make a slot. The slots generally create an effect on the radiation pattern when they are vertical to the current so they can rearrange the distribution.
slots are used to create multi bands in Patch antenna. they are used in antennas according to their impedance and current distribution. further you can search for book of ramesh garg as suggested by Nitin Kumar.
