Recently I've been working on my project of bilayer tablets, in which two layers (one designed as immediate release layer and another one as extended release layer) are to be compressed into one single tablets. I came across a problem of different solubility of two drugs in different media. One of my drugs has better solubility in acidic pH (1.2) and its solubility decreases while increasing the pH (lesser at pH 7.2) and the conditions for the other drug are just the reverse. Both drugs are under BCS Class II category. Is it possible to formulate them into bilayer tablets? What factors should be kept in mind while choosing the appropriate candidate for respective release layers ?
