The reason i ask this, my steel has 0.15%C, and contains both retained austenite and martensite , the retained ausenite fraction varies depending on whether i choose ferrite or martensite for indexing EBSD patterns. choosing both lead to erroneous analysis.
Phase differentiation between BCC ferrite and BCT martensite is not practical during EBSD mapping. However, the generally lower pattern quality of martensite compared with ferrite provides a mean to distinguish between these two phase. This means, just use ferrite and austenite for indexing during the data measurement. Later using your data analysis software set a thresh-hold for the data points which are indexed as ferrite. Below the thresh-hold most of the data points are martensite and above that most of the data points are ferrite.
We already had this question several times at Researchgate... As far as I know, the term martensite describes a microstructure and not a phase. At least if you are searching in ICSD and AMCSD there is no phase description. Also bainite describes a special microstructure. Finally, you need to say how do you define these terms. As H. Alimadadi already pointed out, the major difference to ferrite is the deviation from a perfect crystal which results in a worse pattern quality. Any discrimination between these microstructures and phases needs a special calibration and cannot be generalized (until now). There are some papers which demonstrate an obvious coincidence but you should ask yourself why no software offers a simple toolbox which is doing this if it would be really possible which common opportunities.
