I am writing a thesis on a specific subgenre of film in relation to feminism and was wondering what methods are best to adapt when doing an in-depth analysis of the selected films. What would be the right method(s) in order to perform a well-rounded analysis (textual, visual, narrative) on multiple aspects of the films selected?
Are you studying feminism as it appears in film, female storytellers, or female characters as they are portrayed, or events in the history of´feminism as depicted in film? You could also study Sylvester Stallone and his movies from a feminist perspective? Then you move the feminist part away from the object and into your concepts, your analytical tools. You must find out which aspect of the movies that interest you, or else you end up in the mistake i made when i studied. I call it "the rise and fall of the roman empire-fallacy". It just becomes too huge. You can select, an analysis of six feminist movies from each of the last decades of the twentieth century. But will you have selected the most representiave movies? Narrow down, follow interest.
As an historian who worked with films and history I would suggest that the methodology be chosen considering your sources or research objects.
I would recommend that you limit yourself to two or three films that represent your sub-genre. This will allow you to explore in depth the aspects of your thesis and spend more time investigating the theory to support your point of view.
As my experience, you can use comparative method to explore feminism in your film analysis. Particularly if you focus on the characters. Such as, how is feminism applied in this film and that film, then you compare them. Next, you can see how the theory involves in you comparison.

قبل كل شيء أعتقد أنه يجب عليك فهم المغزى العام من الفلم (فهم كلي) ومن ثم عزل العناصر التي تتجسد فيها أفكار النسوية (لقطات الفلم، حوارات، نماذج من الشخصيات) ومن ثم فهم هذا الجزء في ضوء الكل (تماما كالحلقة الهرمونيطيقية)، فإذا ما حصل هذا يمكن الاستعانة بمناهج مختلفة تخدم توجهك وبما أنك في مجال الصورة والسينما ستحتاج إلى جملة من الأدوات المختلفة تستعيرها من مناهج مختلفة (المنهج السيميائي، المنهج البنيوي خصوصا أن الفلم يستند إلى قصة أو سيناريو مكتوب، المنهج المقارن) ومن ثم تركب تحليلك

وذلك من خلال: ما سعى إليه السينياريست وما أراد أن يبثه عن النسوية ورؤاه الفكرية وموقفه منها الأحداث، الشخصيات وطريقة طرحه للمواقف وصراع الشخصيات بتحليل كلام الشخصيات الصورة والصوت والديكور منطلقا من الجزء للوصول للكل الشامل .... وكيف جسد ذلك في عمله السينمائي ( العرض) انطلاقا من اللقطات و نماذج للشخصيات المحورية...
والأهم تحديد الإشكالية حتى تتمكن من الوصول إلى النتائج المرجوة من هذا البحث واتباع منهجية في ذلك
