I am moving away from Agar because it does not efficiently prevent migration of mediator Methylene between the anode and cathode compartments, thus my quest to use a better alternative. l have been using 10% Agar with 5% Sodium Chloride (all w/v %) in the salt Brige.
Have you considered using a cationic exchange membrane instead of a salt bridge. I once constructed a microbial fuell cell using methylene blue as an mediator, where there were two flat compartments separated by a cationic exchange membrane and carbon fiber was used as electrodes in each chamber. I attached a diagram of the one we constructed.
If CEM is not available in your lab, you may try Gore-Tex cloth, which can be found in many clothes for outdoor sports. It works for MFC, but I am not sure of its function for methylene blue. For reference, http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0960852409018033
