What other than optical micrography reflectance differentiate among macerals in terms of their structure?

Coal macerals, mainly Vitrinite, Liptinite and Inertinite comes from woody tissues, soft tissues and fungal/charcoalified of plant respectively. But unlike minerals they do not have any fixed composition or structure. So, what other than reflectance differentiate them fundamentally? What structural and chemical properties make one maceral more shiny, combustible or hard compared to others?
