I'm working in a project where we have a climbing hanger plate and we need to identify the material from which is made.
We already applied the Ashby method, this gave us the AISI 304 as a result. Now we have to verify this, comparing test methods with this result. That's why i'm asking this.
Also, what standards can we use to read about it? (For example: ASTM - Axx, etc)
I would really appreciate this a lot.

You could apply optical emission spectroscopy (OES), resp. glow-discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES) to determine the chemical composition of your material. Using magnetic methods (such as a Ferritscope) works as well, BUT austenitic stainless steels (para-magnetic) quite often have a martensite layer (ferro-magnetic) on the surface that stems from production. This layer will influence your measurement and distort the results. Furthermore, a Ferritscope does not give you reliable results for thin sheet materials.
The chemical composition of the grade AISI 304 can be found e.g. in the ASM Metals Handbook.

The only sure way to confirm the composition is by chemical analysis, OES will give the full composition. Any other method is likely to have some uncertainty, that may or may not matter. Compare the result to ASTM A240 or EN10088.
Remember the composition and alloy grade don't give any information about the actual mechanical properties. The values in the standard may well be quite conservative relative to the actual properties of the component.

You can use a PMI (Positive Material Identification)method, such as X-ray Fluorescence.
There are portable XRF analyzers which are easy and fast to use.
The quickest and simplest way is to use PMI (Positive Material Identification) . Note PMI cannot tell you the carbon content (if that is important) as the electrode is carbon. PMI (XRF analyser) is available from SS fabricators or NDT companies
Chemical analysis of the material primarily for Cr, Ni and carbon content along with the presence of other elements confirming the recommended chromium and nickel equivalents may identify the AISI 304 stainless steel.

Check the application requirements to select the perfect material. that is service condition, strength you need (yield, tensile, fatigue, creep, SCC, etc.), corrosion condition, temperature, magnetic requirement, costs, availability etc. The Ashby method may help you, but do not forget about the experience.
Carry out the chemical composition test and check out for the grade from the standard specifications handbook.
