Hi. There are many ways to go about discourse analysis. I used text-linguistic analysis (sentence level) to look at rhetorical positioning. I suggest looking at other studies in social media to see what they used. Another approach is to ask yourself what stands out to you as a researcher. Then, look at the research on that topic (e.g., argumentation, interest, use of language/terms (the latter would work with text-linguistic analysis). There are some interesting studies of language use over time (e.g., way language changes to form a 'discourse' around a certain group of people/concept/positioning). Environmentalist is a good example. Have fun! It's a great topic you have to dive into!

Oui, c'est intéressant mais il faudra préciser dès le départ les aspects sur lesquels vous procédez l'analyse. Le corpus qui est l'ensemble des énoncés des internautes vous permet à mon avis de cerner l'analyse sur des aspects comme: le lexique où vous mettez le point sur la morphologie des mots (généralement modifiés, coupés, raccourcis dans ce contexte de communication); la syntaxe en matière d'usage lié à la norme; la phonétique où ces usagers cherchent d'autres modes expressifs par lesquels ils transcrivent autrement les signes. A cela s'ajoute la possibilité d'un encodage hybride, sorte de codeswitching, codes mixtes.

D'autres pistes d'exploitation du corpus sont possibles. A titre d'exemple la composante culturelle/interculturelle étant le corpus concerne les natifs et les non natifs.Sans émarger la composante énonciative relevant de l'aspect émotionnel transcrite par le biais des émoticônes.

Content Analysis

Open coding as well as focused coding can be used under this method in analysing data.

Emerson et al (2011) :

Qualitative analytic coding usually proceeds in two different phases. In open coding, the ethnographer reads fieldnotes line-by-line to identify and formulate any and all ideas, themes, or issues they suggest, no matter how varied and disparate. In focused coding, the fieldworker subjects fieldnotes to fine-grained, line-by-line analysis on the basis of topics that have been identified as being of particular interest. (172)

It depends on what research questions you are going to answer.

It depends on your objectives/research questions/patterns/themes which you intend to investigate. Mostly it is content analysis which helps.

Reader's response theory could explain how a specific content is interpreted by different readers. You could make a survey and ask people to respond to it. It is sometimes surprising how others understand the same text differently.
