Hypothetical situation: When submitting a manuscript, you find that a journal (Journal A) has high impact factor but might not have the right audience for your manuscript. Alternatively the right audience for your manuscript might be present for a journal of lower impact factor (Journal B). Your manuscript matches the scopes for both journals (albiet loosely for Journal A).
In this given scenario, which journal would you choose A or B? and why?

You raise a very good question for which I do not believe there is one answer that applies in all situations. Assuming you have no directives from your institution and depending upon your discipline, I would suggest going for the journal that has the right audience. A key part of our role of researchers is to disseminate our research findings to the appropriate audience and engage in subsequent discussion. Journal B would assist this more. However, if your institution encourages or requires you to publish in high impact factor journals, or this is expected of your discipline, then to engage in the 'game' would suggest you go for journal A.

Thank you for the explanation. The point on institutional requirements is very true since better acknowledgement for your work is given when they see that you have published in a high impact factor journal. Lower impact factors have become a sort of stigma in this regard.
I think the impact factor calculated on the audience only.If I am wrong Please correct me. ANd if not such then high audience is always good the more people read the more citation you get.
