I think, apart from your course studies which gives you the base to build on for a phd, your work/ research experience on the subject is very important. It will give you a more detailled view of the fieldin which you are thinking of doing a phd, which is very different from bachelor or master degree courses. Your grades do not necessarily reflect your ability to do a phd.
