Given a very busy teaching schedule and administrative work, university teachers are required to conduct research. Is it still possible for them to produce high quality papers? How?
Ability to develop high-impact research in its scientific field, pose intellectually stimulating questions, achieve balance between teaching and research and the ability to communicate the knowledge it produces to different communities. Finally, be able to train new researchers and integrate them into the academy.
Actually research works needs true passion, commitment and dedication. Sometimes due to the professional and other commitments It seems difficult to focus on research work. However, when this research work become pleasure and sense of accomplishment despite of other works it is possible to contribute in knowledge. However the university requirements for high impact factor journal publications, work environment, colleagues do matters to make the whole research process to move on positive directions to certain extent.
Teaching and researching are two different things. Some universities require that professors publish at least two/three papers a year. However, the workload between teaching and researching become a "burning process" that professors decided to focus on researching leaving his or her teaching skills relegated.
Because is mandatory to publish these papers to prevent consequences that professors neglect their role as a teachers in order accomplish the guidelines of their positions.
Inventing or innovation new product/services or processes that can be put to commercial production by the industry for beneficial use of common masses. Today most of the research work is old wine in new bottle and all paper tiger which is nothing but trash! Thus wastage of most precious item of human intelligence and time for such useless work.
In my own opinion, it is quality/ground-breaking research as well as the people he has trained in his field of study that makes him a great researcher.
Find students who ask piercing questions. Those questions will motivate research. However, it is not easy finding such students. It is not always weakness in the students. Exams can be a menance to intellectual industry. Teachers must make it clear to students in advance that the exams will test strength of thought not tightness of memory. Now, only the best teachers can set exams that test strength of thought.
Are good researchers also good teachers? The relationship between research quality and teaching quality
We investigate the relationship between research quality and teaching quality using data from Maastricht University, the Netherlands, where students are randomly allocated to different teachers within the same course. We measure research quality by the publication records of the teachers and teaching quality by both student evaluations of the teachers and final student grades. We find that being taught by teachers with high quality publications leads to higher grades for master students. This is not fully reflected in the student evaluations of teachers. Master students do not give higher scores to teachers with high quality of publications, bachelor students give lower scores...
Looking for practical answers to questions generated in the classroom, and then come back and discuss findings with students. This boosts their learning and makes teaching more fun.
The ability to ignite the young minds for research, developing partnership with students for research and keeping an open eye for developments taking place in the field of interest.
University teacher must go beyond text book and syllabus. He/she should be proficient in connecting theoretical foundations of his domain with the applications seen in day-to-day life. He should have hind sight, foresight and farsightedness to follow inter-disciplinary approach for establishing utility of his discipline to one and all.
Well, the research is a personal passion that is driven with the linkage of classroom. The class room is a lab for new ideas, new discussions and new abilities. I believe that in the social sciences and management we can have a good research published based upon the passion to drive, good support from the fraternity and guidance from the students and friends. Its all about maximizing based on shared values.
One method I used as a beginning assistant professor was to have students, as part of their lab exercise, conduct experiments related to my research interests. This led to 2 of my first publications and also taught my students that real science is not the repetition of previously conducted tests, but a venture into the unknown.
