Individual and small group assessments can easily be done online through various video communication tools (e.g. Collaborate, Teams, Meet, Skype, Whereby). No adjustments to the assignments are necessary. All these tools allow two-way voice communication, have chat functionality, allow document and screen sharing with which an assessment can take place very much the same way as normal in a face to face situation.

Different test tools are available. The choice of which tool is best depends on whether the test is formative or summative. For formative tests, popular tools like Kahoot and Socrative can be very useful. For summative tests, it might be preferable to use more robust applications. An application that I find works well is Quayn, but other applications can do the same.

Then there is another aspect to your post that might be interesting to consider. Working online means that some assignments can not ben done in the same way as they would be done in face to face situations. Because of this difference, the way of evaluating and testing can also change. When redesigning education for distance purposes, it can be useful to consider possibilities for online evaluation first and then align the rest of the course to the possibility chosen.

Thank you for your comments Francine Behnen . I can see how easy and effective to use formative assessment. However, the challenge is with summative assessment, particularly if we want to use fromal tests, but online.

Cheating can be reduced (not abolished) for online tests by setting a short time frame for the test, randomize questions, randomize answers. An application like Quayn does a fantastic job on this.
