A regional cold water stream experienced a complete fish kill (all trout and sculpins killed), but no benthic invertebrates appear to have been harmed. Even highly intolerant forms of mayflies and caddisflies remained after the fish kill, and benthic invertebrate communities did not differ between the fish kill reach and another section of stream not affected by the kill.

Many species of benthic invertebrates are very sensitive to ammonia, so those sensitive forms should have been affected if ammonia was the culprit. I can imagine invertebrates deeper in the substrate maybe missing out on toxic conditions passing by overhead, but nothing appeared to be missing from the community after the fish kill. Very strange, since so many fish died.
