Hello my dear colleagues,
Recently, we published a paper in one of Wiley journals. We spent a great deal of time designing a cover image for it. Now, it has been accepted as a front cover page. However, they have asked to contribute around A$3000 for that. I want to know what is your idea about that. Why researchers need to pay that amount of money after the hardship of passing the peer-reviewing process and designing a high-quality image? Please share your opinion about that.
I did not know they will charge for that!! $3000 seems to be a bit unfair. What is it for?

Does not seem fair - if the publisher just uses the files you submit, including high quality images, there is no point in charging for this. I remember we were asked if we wish to pay for coloured figures and we opted not to, then high resolution black-and-white figure appeared in the paper. If the production process of your figure is costly, the publisher should provide cheaper/free alternatives, perhaps with a lower resolution or withour colours.
Thanks Yuriy. You are right. Yet, if they had asked for an optional payment for a colored copy, that might have made sense. But to appear as a cover image, it is mandatory to pay such amount of money.
I assume you were not aware of this mandatory payment when you were submitting the manuscript to that particular journal, but now you know what policy they apply. My guess is you’ll probably publish your next paper in this journal not very soon... :-)
