If the conditions in employment are not to my liking I do not stay long, no matter what the pay. I prefer to control my working life so I am self-employed, and money is not an inducement.
A long time ago; the first goal of work was to serve and help others with our skills. Before the invention of money; people of the same village used to work for each other. Now; most people go to work because of salary waiting for the last week ( like now ) to see money in their account. If we go to work ; having in mind serving others, we will be much happier and feel less stress because it looks like giving service as charity to others. Charity is source of guenine happiness. On the other hand; money is material world....never satisfied.
Both material (money) as well as non-material benefits are important. At begining of carrier money is most important. Later on non- matrial benifits starts its role and day by day it increases. Over all success and happiness depends on good combination of both factors.
It is certain to me that the material benefits (money) come first because through them I can achieve the rest of my motivations because the achievement of any motive at the present time needs to provide the necessary tools for him and this is not possible without the availability of money.

Organization have to make right combination and balance between material and non-material motivation. Also, every person have specific and unique motivation drivers. There no universal rules ("one size fits all"). So, managers have to find custom made solution to motivate every individual employee, especially motivation scheme for talents or VIE (Very Important Employee).
Non material motivations requires very hard struggle in life and tremendous patience, I can hardly believe that there exist somebody who works only for non-material benefits, though this is cherubic.

As researchers, we know that the material reward for our work is not good. I guess that the perfect combinaison is just enought money to be focus on research, university or lab projects and creativity expressions. Not getting money for money to spend, but enought to have a peacefull mind and to avoid all material basics troubles (as rent, food, stress about future career, working life, etc.). That's what I desire, but unfortunately this is hard to obtain in social sciences and in humanities.
This question depends on other factors: what level of employees are we referring to and the psychological make-up of the employees themselves.
Usually, lower ranking employees need higher salaries and therefore can be motivated by salary changes. However, higher level employees may not be motivated to the same extent by money and would seek recognition and more challenge in their jobs.
Then again, there are employees who like to be challenged in their jobs and enjoy job variety, so for them, probably promotions would be more motivating than merely salary increases.

As many of the friends described material resources are important up to a certain level because they are necessary.Moreover, materiel resources actually gauge the standard and availability of non materiel resources. for example good and decent colleagues up to some extent depend upon material resources as it show their status and understanding with the environment.
