Most researchers prefer conventional formal way of education. I will prefer incorporate of indigenous knowledge and practices in the present syllabus. It is a difficult task to do, but very important.
My emphasis will be to make indigenous people part of a developmental activity. Indigenous people are a big resources and has a central position in sustainable development.
It is my personal view, if wrong, ignore it.

First, develop the core theory. Second, specify what the core theory is intended to describe. Third, describe what lies outside the core theory that has noting to do with the core theory. Fourth, develop examples inside and outside the core theory. Fifth, what is left in the core theory still lacking clear explanation.
According to my point of view being the teacher of education, Multicultural education, Human rights education, comparative study of religions and cultures, Peace, interfaith Harmony, philosophy, psychology, and literature subjects sure will contribute positively in SD education.

Your question is critical to the entire world of education and industry.
My experience with Industry is based on many programs on Sustainable Development, Energy and Water Food Prints that focus industries on international standards that compare the companies with each other so promoting competitive advantage and adding value from a stakeholders point of view.
University and training institute students must be encouraged to develop projects on Sustainable Development and Energy and Water foot prints to develop the knowledge on these processe. This must also be encouraged at school level.
And equally important is the practice at homes and the example set by the families to encourage Sustainable development from the cradle to the grave!
Definitely, educational values should include a focus on sustainable development as you will be sensitizing the future generation on its importance and helping them to build an appreciation for protecting and preserving their environment. I hope this publication would provide illuminate the need further:
