though SDD is an established drug in host modulation therapy, the duration of its usage needs to be adressed based on the clinical presentation of the patients.we need to focus on studies where drug can be titrated relevant to the host response.
Treatment includes Nonsurgical and/or surgical therapy + periodic professional maintenance and meticulous home care. Results are excellent with this. The results of treatment depends on individual patient. SDD is not for the treatment, it just can modify the results and I do not think that if above mentioned protocol is followed, there is need for SDD.
But in some individuals, meticulous care alone might be inadequate--- individuals with an exaggerarted host response. For such people, SDD is STILL required. Thanks!
your question is for general normal individuals not for special one and I mentioned already that. Medically compromised cases should be dealt differently.
And one more thing I want to add that the host responses are against the microbial components and in individuals with exaggerated response, the response is always bacterial components. It means there is lack of home care somewhere. Various studies concluded that without pathogenic plaque there will be no periodontal disease.
