Statistics is a branch of applied mathematics and has a major role in almost all natural and social sciences. The methods used in the natural sciences are the most reliable, but the conclusions drawn from them are only possible because they are based on incomplete evidence, in which case the statistics describe these measurements more precisely. Many statistical methods are used, such as measures of central tendency and dispersion, and different methods and methods of pure mathematics are used in statistics such as calculus.

Statistics is part of mathematics, in the sense of a sub-category, just like complex analysis. It is largely applied mathematics, but if we consider probability and statistics as one field, there is significant mathematical theory as well, so it's not entirely applied mathematics.

I can't imagine why anyone would say that statistics is part of (like a sub-category of) political science, economics, or any social science. Statistics is a tool set used by those fields. Mathematics (including statistics) provides a set of tools for engineering, but mathematics is not a sub-category of engineering.

With respect to your opinion, I like to mention that I do agree with the following view:

"

However, is it true that the actual identity of statistics is as " Statistics is a branch of applied mathematics " ?

As far as I understand or I know, it is true that mathematical theories are used / applied in deriving / developing the theory of statistics. But, based on this ground only can statistics be regarded as a branch of applied mathemathematics? Logically, it can be accepted that statistics is a mathematics - dependent subject. But, The logic behind the statement

" Statistics is a branch of applied mathematics "

is still not clear.

That is why I have raised this question.

I also like to raise the same question, as raised by Kenneth Pascoe why anyone would say that statistics is part of (like a subcategory of) political science, economics, or any social science.

I agree with the view of Kenneth Pascoe that Statistics is a tool set used by those fields and that Mathematics as well as including statistics provide a set of tools for engineering.

However, I have found it difficult to accept that Statistics is a part of Mathematics like the fact that Mathematics is not part of Engineering. There are no doubt lot of applications of Mathematics in the development of the theory of Statistics, but this can not be a ground of regarding Statistics as a part of Mathematics as I understand.

Note that there are are lot of applications of Mathematics in the development of the theory of Physics. Based on this similar ground, can we say that Physics is a part of Mathematics. We are all aware that Physics has an independent identity.
