One of my research students (Ph.D. research) had submitted his Ph.D. thesis for the award of Ph.D. degree. One of the two thesis examiners / evaluators assigned by the university had strongly recommended the thesis for the award of the degree while the other examiner had strongly dis-recommended the thesis for the award of the degree. Later on, the university sent the thesis to another examiner for evaluating the thesis. This examiner, after evaluation, recommended the thesis for the awarded of the degree. Consequently, the student was awarded the degree.

This fact creates a doubt on the validity and reliability of evaluation of Ph.D. thesis by the examiners. Can this fact not be a ground / logic for not rejecting the following hypotheses :

(i) There is no proper scale for evaluating the quality of Ph.D.

thesis.

(ii) The evaluation of Ph.D. thesis by the examiners is not free from

subjectivity.

Thus the following question arises:

" Is the existing evaluation process of Ph.D. thesis by the examiners is a vague one ? ".
