What is the time-lag to observe an improvement on survival of patients with breast cancer after a the implement of a national screening?

I read studies that identified an improvement of breast cancer survival after the implementation of screening with mammographies. But, how much time should we observe to identify that the screening was helpful? For example, if a nation-wide screening program was implemented in 2000, the benefits should be seen after 5 years?
