The word "strategy" represents a very deep concept for the level of concern of Portuguese higher education institutions on the subject.
Of course, it also depends very much on the level of academic specialization of each institution. In addition to the academic discussions on the subject there is no common ground of understanding on the subject that allows even thinking about concrete actions and measures on the subject. On the other hand, the relationship between the global economy and global geo-politics renders the role of institutions of higher education (any in the world) that are instrumental in the production of codified (and always debatable) knowledge.
Climate Change is very real. We are working to adjust our individual & collective lifestyles to reduce the environmental impact. We are also supporting implementation of various programmes to mitigate the impact of Climate Change.
Dear @Fikrat, I am not aware of any strategy of adaptation to climate change at my Uiversity for next period. To combat the consequences of climate change is a serious long-term job, which will be at our schedule soon.
Of course, climate change is being studied in some subjects at different departments, but no evidence of strategic approach to the problem.
In my opinion, education and consciousness are very important. My university has a lot of projects concerning this problem, in my country exist a strategy of adaptation to climate changes. But what am I doing is to explain, using climatological data, the impact of climate changes in our life. It is easy for me to explain this, because many years ago I worked in a weather station and I know from the field the manifestation of rainfall, temperature, wind and I saw the increase of the violence to all the meteorological parameters. More than that, in my region, south of Transylvania, exists meteorological data (daily data) since 1851, very useful for climatologists.
As teacher, I try to educate the young generation to preserve the forests (deforestation is a big problem in my country) and to preserve original plants, more adapted to the climate changes.
Climate change issue has made many aspects of geography textbooks in primary and post primary institutions obsolete. So universities globally that eventually admit and advance the knowledge of students should have well developed courses on climate change.
The courses could be incorporated into General Studies programmes. They should not be limited to Geography students only.
Climate change is one of the major objectives in the present Strategic Plan (2013-18) of USP, which ends next year, but I am certain that also in the coming strategic plan (2019-2024) climate change will figure prominantely. Attached I send you the present Strategic Plan. See at page 22
Higher Education’s Role in Adapting to a Changing Climate!
Climate change poses serious threats to human civilization, yet it offers opportunities to create a better future. Colleges and universities face clear and growing risks from climate disruption, and it is critical that presidents, trustees and those with fiduciary responsibility for these institutions be aware of these risks. Addressing these risks can provide the opportunity to recreate institutions of higher education for the 21st century, equipping them to be safe and secure in the face of change, more actively engaged in solving real-world problems, and reorganized to better provide the education and research needed to create and maintain a sustainable society...
Thank you for your contribution. I'd like to know what is the role of the Higher education Ministry or Universities in your country to avoid the climate change impact.
Climate change is one of the most serious challenges in the Pacific Island region. USP has started to introduce efforts that reduce the University's contribution to CC, which is small, but can be further brought down. The University has, with development assistance, started the generation of electricity from the sun. Still much more needs to be done.
The Pacific Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development does not only create capacities in climate science, but also has community-based activities, which mainly should help in CC adaptation and enhancement of resilience.
There is not any specific vision or strategy for facing with climate change in Iranian Universities, Because, they have not considered climate change as fact yet.
